WELCOME
Geoff's Bits started out as the wooden craft division of my wife's bakery business, Breads N' Bits. I made wooden accessories to complement the breads that she made in our kitchen and sold at Farmer's Markets in Contoocook and Henniker NH.
Farmer's Markets have proven to be a less than ideal venue for handmade wooden craft items, So I began to expand to consignment shops and to craft fairs and now the internet.
I have set up a "store" on Etsy (www.etsy.com) and have begun populating the store. There will be many more items available but if you don't see what you want, please don't hesitate to call me on my cell, 603-568-1421. If I can't answer, please leave a message with your phone number and the best time to call. If you prefer, you can email me at [email protected].
One of the things I have discovered is that no matter the variety of items I make, folks want me to create custom colors or patterns to suit their own home. That's OK! It keeps the crafting process exciting!
A couple of things about the materials I use: The species of woods range from local New Hampshire soft and hardwoods such as Spruce; Aromatic Cedar; White and Red Oak, Rock, Birdseye and Tiger Maple; Cherry and Black Walnut. I also love to work with a few exotic species such as Ebony, Wenge, Cocobolo, Bubinga, Bloodwood, Bocote and Zebrawood.
The glue I use is approved by the FDA for indirect food contact and items meant for use with food are finished with a waterproofing finish of my own manufacture which is approved by the FDA for direct food contact. Nothing unusual about the formula, it contains food grade mineral oil and beeswax. Items not specifically designed for use with food may be finished with various types of polyurethane or Waterlox.
Please check out the galleries. Items are priced based on the materials used, the time it takes to make them and their size. Everything is individually crafted using both power and hand tools. Everything is made by me and nothing is "mass-produced". I usually buy rough cut lumber or turning squares and cut them to the desired size and shape. Assembly and sanding is done by hand. It's unlikely you will find two items exactly the same, even within a single set of coasters.
